Soviet Project of Nation-State-Building in Afghanistan

The article examines the Soviet Union’s policy in Afghanistan during period of its military presence there (1979–1989) as a set measures corresponding to modern interpretation concepts nation-building and state-building. It also analyzes theories nation- state-building highlights their main trends, forms, problems. author proposes unique approach that combines these two “nation-state-building” relation project Afghanistan. elaborates on tasks 1980s well implementation results. Due combination “nation-building” “state-building” complex structure “nation-state-building”, draws conclusions, first, about applicability this specific Afghanistan, and, second, complexity itself, which included ideological, political, economic, components. On basis archive documents, memoirs diplomatic actors, wide scope academic research, substantiates idea large-scale nation-state-building foreign policy, indicates encountered great difficulties from unfolding civil war inability Afghan leaders consolidate political life country. leadership quickly realized unreadiness society for proposed systemic social transformations. Despite fact goals were not achieved, does diminish scale historical significance.
